A New Temple In Jerusalem Is Coming!

Why should a modern believer in Jesus care about the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem? Isn't that the religious system that Jesus ended? Why is it called the 3rd Temple? Let's take a look at this and answer these three questions.

It Shows Up In Our Future

First, we should care about the Jewish Temple because it appears in Old and New Testament prophecy, standing and busy in the end times. God's prophets reveal a picture of the end times when the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem is active. Daniel says he (the world ruler) will confirm a covenant of peace “for one week” (often interpreted as seven years) but break that covenant in the middle of the term. This will happen in a standing Temple involved in sacrifices.

“And he [the prince] will make a firm covenant with the many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put a stop to sacrifice and grain offering; and on the wing of abominations will come one who makes desolate [some interpretations say, set up an idol on the wing or precipice of the Temple], even until a complete destruction, one that is decreed, is poured out on the one who makes desolate.”

Daniel 9:27

The anti-Messiah will also proclaim himself to be god!

In the New Testament, God's Temple is mentioned with the coming man of lawlessness.

“He [the man of lawlessness] will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God.”

2 Thess. 2:4

With this prophetic word revealing a Temple, many modern Biblical scholars agree that the Temple will be restored in Jerusalem before or during the tribulation. From a believer's point of view, it is exciting to see evidence that the Third Temple is coming since it is part of God's mysterious plan and will be used for his glory.

The religious system and the sacrificial slaughtering of animals on a modern altar in a restored Jewish Temple seem hard to believe. Could that actually happen in the modern world? Especially since we know Christ is the actual sacrifice, the symbolic animal sacrifices pointed toward. Jesus nailed to the cross the law with all of its requirements as our atonement, once and for all.1

Rebuilding Soon...

But the Jewish leadership has yet to accept that fact. Today, groups like the Temple Institute of Jerusalem are preparing for the rebuilding of the Third Temple very soon. They received the shipment of the Red Heifers on September 15, 2022, which are required for Temple sacrifices. The Temple Levitical Mens Choir is practicing songs, and weavers of purple, red, and blue garments are made for priestly robes. Furniture for the Temple is partly constructed, such as the golden menorah, stolen by Titus, the Roman General in the looting of Herod's Temple in 70 C.E. 2

A New Jewish Temple?

King Solomon's first Temple and Herod's second Temple are gone. For nearly 2000 years, believers have wondered about the Temple and reasoned that the passages about the next one must mean a figurative temple. After all, since 2000, four more Muslim Mosques have been built on the mount where the Dome of the Rock stands, the place of the Jewish Temples. Could those be there if the Jewish Temple occupied the mount? Scholars guessed for two centuries about what the Temple passages in scripture might mean, but now it seems obvious that a real stone-and-mortar structure will be constructed. And as a follower of the returning Christ Jesus, it is exciting to see his mysterious plan being worked out.
