The Love Letter

February 17, 2021

Now that my husband and I have been married for a few years, he has figured out that I don’t just want a box of chocolates and a dozen roses for Valentine’s Day. While I appreciate both chocolate and flowers, what I desire is a handwritten note with a personal message just for me. That’s what really hits home. Around Valentine’s Day, I reflect on what real love looks like. This instinctively causes me to look to God, the creator of love and the best example of love there is. I look to God’s love letter, the Bible, written to us so that we might not only have a relationship with Him but also learn how to deepen that relationship (2 Tim 3:16-17). He doesn’t just shower us with teddy bears and candies with cute messages but instead with a personal, lasting love.

He Knows You

God knows me intimately as His child. He knows everything about me and still loves me. As humans, we usually try to put our best foot forward when we’re around others so that they’ll like us. But God already knows everything about us. He knows our past, present, and future, and He still chooses to love us! I find it such a relief knowing that I don’t have to pretend to be someone I’m not.  David understood God’s love for His people. He said:

How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God!
How great is the sum of them!

Psalm 139:17 NKJV

When God thinks about me, He has precious thoughts. You might think, “Yeah, but God’s busy. He isn’t thinking about me very often.” But no, David continues:

If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand;
When I awake, I am still with You

Psalm 139:18 NKJV

Wow! God is thinking precious thoughts about me so often that I can’t even count them! He was with me while I slept, and He is still with me when I wake up. God is near me day and night and He is thinking so, so many precious thoughts about me. Well, if I needed a confidence boost today, knowing more about God’s love toward me sure provides that!

He Wants You to Know Him

Have you ever been in a dating relationship where you tried to see and talk to the other person as little as possible? No way because how in the world would you get to know that person better if you didn’t spend time with them? I think there is a great Biblical example of how Jesus wants us to get to know Him better in the story of Mary and Martha in Luke 10. Jesus comes to Martha’s house. She spends her time preparing food for Jesus, which, might I mention, is a good thing to do. But, her sister, Mary, chose to sit at Jesus’ feet and listen to Him. Jesus ends up telling Martha

...one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part...

Luke 10:42 NKJV

There are many good things that we can fill our time with each day. But Jesus reminded Martha our number one priority should be to get to know Him. Don’t be satisfied with a subpar relationship with God. Take time to sit at Jesus’ feet and learn from Him.

Love Grows

He wants our relationship to grow deeper over time in the same way that it takes time for any relationship to grow. Our relationship with God takes time to grow and develop.  How can we spend time getting to know Jesus? A couple of ways are through prayer and reading the Bible.

Talk to Him

Jesus gave us a model prayer in Matthew 6. He didn’t intend for it to be “vain repetitions” (vs 6) but instead a special time “daily” to speak to our Father in heaven (vs 11). He even tells us what things we ought to pray for. Pray for God’s will to be done.

...Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Matthew 6:10 NKJV

Listen to Him

The only way we can know His will is if we are reading the Bible and getting to know Him (Acts 17:11, 2 Tim 2:15). I encourage you to begin doing this today. Ask God to help you find a time in your day when you can pray and read the Bible. Be encouraged in your relationship with God. He loves you deeply with an intimate kind of love, and He wants our love for Him to grow as we get to know Him better.

The people here were of more noble character...since they received the word with eagerness and examined the Scriptures daily…

Acts 17:11 CSB

As Valentine’s Day chocolates and roses surround us, let them remind us of God’s precious love toward us and how we can deepen our relationship with Him through prayer and reading the Bible.

You may be reading this post and thinking something like: “Well, I’m not a child of God, but I’m sure interested in becoming one because I need that kind of love in my life”. All you have to do to become a child of God is to believe in His Son, Jesus. He gives you eternal life at that very moment of belief and your personal love story with God begins. He already loves you and desires to make you His child. So, I urge you today to look to Him for the best kind of love - an everlasting love that’s personal and dynamic!
