My husband told me he wanted to stop looking at porn but told me he needed my help.
As much as we would like to think we can fix our husbands we cannot. As believers, it’s the Holy Spirit’s job to transform. However, God did design us to be helpers for our husbands (Genesis 2:18). So how do we join the fight and help?
As with any spiritual battle we need to begin by preparing our minds and our hearts. Paul’s words in Colossians give us our orders. This is not the time to shut him out and give the silent treatment or to unleash our fiery tongues or even to be complacent. This is the time to…
…put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.Colossians 3:12-15 NKJV
Immediately following these instructions, Paul tells wives to submit to their husbands and husbands to love their wives. (Colossians 3: 18-19)
This is not an easy task to carry out but we are not alone. As believers, we have the Holy Spirit within us and this is His jam. So, whether you are married or hoping to be married someday, pray. Pray for God to prepare your heart to be your husband’s helper. And pray for your spouse or future spouse who is most likely fighting this battle.
My husband, Lucas, and I surely don’t have all the answers. But we do have our experience to share. We know we are not the only ones fighting this battle so we would love to share some practical steps we have taken that have helped and we’d like to encourage others in the battle.
