What did Jesus mean by everlasting life?

In this final episode of the Seeker Series, we slow down and look carefully at the promise Jesus actually made. The resurrection confirms that Jesus’ promise can be trusted, but we still need to understand what He was promising.

Jesus says the one who believes in Him has everlasting life, will not perish, has passed from death into life, will not come into judgment, and will be raised up at the last day.

This episode explains why everlasting life is not temporary, probationary, or maintained by our performance. It is life Jesus gives freely and permanently to the one who believes Him.

Prayer is good. Confession is good. Turning from sin is good. But Jesus never presents those as requirements for receiving everlasting life. The condition Jesus gives is to believe Him.

So if you are persuaded that Jesus is telling the truth — that He gives everlasting life to the one who believes in Him, and that because of His promise you will never perish — then according to Jesus, you have everlasting life.

This does not mean discipleship, obedience, warnings, rewards, or how a child of God lives are unimportant. Those are important topics, and we will continue exploring how a person who has received everlasting life is called to live, and how this freely secured life fits with the rest of what the Bible teaches.
