What if much of the confusion over faith and works comes from treating two completely different questions as though they were the same? Is faith alone enough to receive everlasting life and become a permanent child of God? Yes. But is faith alone everything involved in living as a faithful disciple of Jesus? No. In this video, we examine Jesus’ promise in John 6:47 and the important distinction between receiving everlasting life and living faithfully after receiving it. Believing in Jesus for the life He promises is the only condition He gives for receiving that life. Discipleship, however, involves abiding in His word, bearing fruit, denying ourselves, sacrifice, endurance, good works, and ongoing faithfulness. Those things matter deeply—but they do not cause the new birth, keep someone born into God’s family, or prove that it occurred. They belong in their proper place as matters of discipleship, fellowship, growth, discipline, consequences, and reward. Adding another requirement does not strengthen Jesus’ promise. It changes it.
