Have you ever been haunted by a persistent whisper of doubt, questioning your salvation and place in God’s kingdom? You’re not alone. Satan, the father of lies and deceit, works tirelessly to sow seeds of uncertainty in the hearts of believers.
Of course, Satan doesn’t want you or anyone to be saved. When preachers proclaim the gospel—which Jesus compared to a farmer sowing a field with seeds—the devil comes swooping in like a raven to take away the word from their hearts “so that they may not believe and be saved” (Luke 8:12).
That’s Satan’s primary goal. But if he couldn’t stop you from being saved, he’ll try to do the next worse thing, i.e., sow his own seeds of uncertainty about your salvation into your heart. If he can turn you inward to your subjective doubts and away from Christ and His objective promises, Satan can minimize your effectiveness as a Christian. After all, it’s hard to live as a Christian if you aren’t sure that you are one.
What can you do about that?
Just as Jesus refuted Satan’s lies with the truth of Scripture, you can talk back to those tempting thoughts with Biblical truth.
1. “Jesus might have died for others, but I doubt He died for me.”
He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not only for ours, but also for those of the whole world (1 John 2:2).
For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me” (1 Corinthians 11:23-24, emphasis added).
2. “I don’t know if Jesus wants me to be saved.”
“Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).
On the last and most important day of the festival, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink” (John 7:37).
3. “How can I be saved if I still sin?”
When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins (Colossians 2:13 NIV, emphasis added).
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1).
4. “But I don’t feel saved.”
Let God be true, but every man a liar (Romans 3:4 KJV).
5. “What if God changes His mind about me?”
God is not a man, that he might lie, or a son of man, that he might change his mind. Does he speak and not act, or promise and not fulfill? (Numbers 23:19)
“Everyone the Father gives me will come to me, and the one who comes to me I will never cast out” (John 6:37).
Doubt is a formidable adversary, but it is no match for the truth found in God’s Word. By confronting each whisper of uncertainty with the powerful promises of Scripture, you can silence the enemy’s lies and reaffirm your salvation in Christ.
Remember, your feelings may waver, but God’s promises remain steadfast and unchanging. You’re in His hands forever, and nothing can separate you from His love, not even doubt (John 10:28-29; Romans 8:38).
