Prayer, For Kids

Have you ever really, really, really missed your mommy or daddy?

Do you remember when one of them had to be away from home for a few days or even a few weeks?

Maybe your daddy had to go on a business trip to another state. Or your mom had to care for your grandpa or grandma for a while. It might have been fun for a day, but pretty soon, I bet you missed them.

And then, one day, they called to see how you were doing. Wasn’t it so good to talk to them on the phone? You want to talk to people that you love.

It's the same way with God.

God wants you to talk to Him. About anything and everything!

He loves you and wants to hear from you.

Do you know what talking to God is called? Praying. That’s what praying is. Praying isn’t just about repeating words you’ve memorized, like saying grace before eating supper (although that’s ok). Praying is just talking to God.

Jesus said,

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!” (Matthew 7:7-11 NIV).

Think of what Jesus said. Would your daddy ever give you a snake if you were hungry for bread? Of course not. That would be mean. And dangerous. And your dad loves you!

Well, if your earthly dad wouldn’t do that to you, do you think God would ever give you a snake if you asked for bread? Of course not, because He loves you even more! Even if you prayed for the wrong thing (and we all do), God would just ignore that prayer and give you good things you didn’t ask for because He loves you.

So talk to your Heavenly Father. Tell him about whatever you’re thinking, feeling, or worried about.

You can talk to God about school, friends, family, and even your hamster!

God cares about all those things because He loves you.

You can talk to God anytime and anywhere because your Heavenly Father is everywhere, and He knows how to give the best gifts.
