What is a Christian? Hey, everyone! Lucas Kitchen here. So, what does it mean to be a Christian? Let's break it down. First off, let's look at what the Bible says. The first place believers were called Christians is in Acts 11:26. And Christian literally means "little Christ." So, it's not just about believing in Jesus, but also trying to live like Him. But here's where it gets interesting. The word "Christian" gets used in a bunch of different ways. In some places, like countries with a lot of different religions, "Christian" might just mean someone from a country that has its roots in Christianity. It's like saying, "Oh, you're from the West? Must be a Christian country." But it doesn't mean everyone there is a believer. Then, there's how the word is used in countries that are called Christian. Someone might say, "I'm Christian," just to mean they follow certain behaviors or traditions. But that doesn't always mean they have a personal belief in Jesus. Now, in countries where Christianity isn't the main religion, saying you're a Christian usually means you actually believe in Jesus and follow His teachings. The term is also used as an adjective for certain kinds of media, like Christian music, Christian fiction, or Christian movies. And even in that case, it has a range of meanings. Christian media can mean that it's just family-friendly, without profanity or inappropriate content for children. Or it can mean that it actually shares an explicit Christian message. So, there's a range of meanings when it's used for media. It's also sometimes used as a descriptor of specific actions. If someone says something mean, another person might respond by saying, "Well, that's not very Christian." And what they mean is that the behavior doesn't line up with the expected behaviors that come out of Christianity. So, let's get to the deeper meaning. At the most pure, biblically accurate level, a Christian is someone who believes in Jesus and also consciously tries to live like Him. There's a difference between just believing and actually acting on that belief. You can believe in Jesus and have salvation without showing it outwardly, but that's not the full picture. Being a Christian, in the biblical sense, is more about being a disciple, not just a believer. It's about faith and living out that faith. This distinction is important because while faith alone can bring salvation, God's design is for us to transform and live as followers of Jesus. So, sometimes when people say "Christian," they mean someone who just believes. But a clearer understanding includes living out that faith. And living like Christ brings rewards both in this life and in the eternal kingdom. So, in a nutshell, salvation is free by belief alone, but rewards will require you to be a true Christian, going above and beyond. Thanks for watching, and remember, it's not just about belief—it's about living it out! because while faith alone can bring salvation, God's design is for us to transform and live as followers of Jesus.
